About the Author
Linda was born in a small mining village at the southern edge of the Durham coalfield in the Northeast of England. She had a lifelong passion for history and historical fiction and a five week independent tour of Spain in 1988 was a life-changing event. She became interested in Spain's history. She wanted to know more, much more. She studied Spanish and then started reading Spanish sources. Many exciting days were to follow in the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid, other public and private libraries in Spain, and the British Library in London. During 2007-08 VeritasPublishing published her Spanish Hapsburg Trilogy: That Other Juana. (Juana la Loca). A Matter of Pride (Charles V, HRE) and Wives & Other Women (Philip II of Spain). In 2008 she was elected a Full Member of The Society of Authors. In 2009 That Other Juana (Joana, a Louca) was published in Portugal by Editorial Presença (Lisbon) and in January 2012 they published A Matter of Pride (Uma Questão de Orgulho). In February 2012 her Brazilian publisher Editora Europa (São Paulo) published That Other Juana (Joana, a Louca) in Brazil and after its success they published A Matter of Pride (Carlos V) in September 2013.

Interesting story though somewhat hard to read due to typos, grammar and dropped sentences

This was a wonderful story about a woman from history that I knew little about. The story was told well but I wondered if some things were lost in translation. There were many misspelled words and even phrases and sentences that were left unfinished. It was an exercise in imagination to try to determine what the author wanted to convey. For some reason, this problem seemed to be worse at the beginning of the book. I'm glad I stuck with it and got through to learn the life story of Queen Juana.

Great book but....

I really did love the story but it really needs careful repair or editing of the Kindle edition. Every so often the words get jumbled over the course of several lines to a number of paragraphs. It isn't impossible to follow the story but it is annoying to come across lines of nonsense. Otherwise a great story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Between 2800 and 1300 B.C., for example, Britain, the Nordic states, Greece and the western Mediterranean states were bound together by their maritime exchange of bronze, whose use in Britain and Ireland had spread by 1400 B.C. to Greece and the Aegean. From 800 to 500 B.C.—the three hundred years that changed the world—the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and Carthaginians emerged from relative obscurity into major empires whose struggles to control the seas were for the first time recorded in writing. Great book, synthesizing many years and fields

This is a remarkable overview of an important period in human history in what we now call Europe (basically the period from the end of the last ice age to the medieval period, and covering the beginnings of farming and the rise of cities and settlements: the Neolithic and post-Neolithic period). This is also a summary of archeologist Cunliffe's other works, now contained between two covers. The author discusses everything from trade, migration and the domestication of animals to art and literature -- with Homer's great oral tales in particular getting very good treatment -- and of course languages and warfare. It is well written (on paper is of an exceptional quality) and filled with wonderful crisp and clear photographs, as well as charts and diagrams. The only possible downside is the sheer weight of the book, making it resemble a coffee book, though it isn't that. So, all in all, a great work about an important subject -- the big picture of how the West came to be the West we know -- by a learned and lucid expert in the field(s), pitched at the intelligent ordinary reader, to boot.

A great treasure

This book is a great treasure - if I was headed for a desert island it would be one of the ten books I would take with me. (And that is after a good forty years of reading history and literature) Cunliffe gives a wide and deep summary of Europe's growth and evolution from the paleolithic to the Roman empire. Unlike so many historians with narrow views, he weaves together findings from archaeology, climatology, geographpy, medical genetics, social history and ecology. His prose is a miracle of clarity, conciseness and sparkled here and there with a little wit and mischief. He highlights the big controversies, lets you know where he stands on them, but is never dogmatic or overbearing. He writes from a long career in this field, yet everything in the book is right up to date. The maps, charts and photos are all a graphic designer's dream - perfectly rendered and always completely integrated with the text. In fact, the book is a publisher's masterpiece. I could go on and on - but just go out and get this!!

Fascinating, smooth reading

Along with Mithen's After The Ice, this is the most enjoyable book on European prehistory that I have read. Filled with colorful maps and photos that follow along with the text descriptions, written elegantly and with enough detail to not seem too "dumbed-down" for the layman. If every professor or researcher published their books in such an appealing and vibrant fashion, it would cut into the ratings of the Science and History channels.

Memorable Villains and Locales

A great read for anyone who likes ancient religions, mythology, mystics, oracles, and international intrigue. In this contemporary mystery, the Delphi Group attempts to stop a major international religious shift being birthed by an ancient, ruthless sect. The events evolve in the streets of Paris and the mountains and medieval monasteries of Spain. The subject matter is reminiscent of Dan Brown's symbol books, while the depth of information about art and masterpieces reminds me of Jeffrey Archer’s False Impressions. The story has great pacing, accelerating as the novel progresses. Definitely a memorable read with well-crafted descriptions and seriously scary villains.

Enjoyed reading a great deal

I received an advanced review copy of this book from the publisher, and just finished reading. I enjoyed reading a great deal and rate it a 4 to a 4.5. It kept my interest from beginning to end with an unexpected twist (that I assume will hopefully lead to future books in the series). There were what were obviously references to a story prior to this one, but the book stood on its own. I have purchased the prior book and am just beginning to read. I would not be surprised if this book were made into a movie... if so I would see it.

About the Author
Archana Prasad is Associate Professor at the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and was earlier a fellow of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. Grade 3-6–Gonsalves awakens young readers from the twilight fantasy of Imagine a Night (S & S, 2003) and invites them to visit his evocative dreamscapes in broad daylight. The "wow" factor in every image is high, though some of the acrylic paintings pack more of a conceptual punch than others. The illustration that accompanies "imagine a day…/…when your house enfolds you/like a nest,/rocking gently/in the autumn wind" is definitely pretty neat. But "imagine a day…/…when you forget how to fall" is more deeply powerful, insightful, and visually demanding. The dust jacket copy indicates that Gonsalves's influences include such surrealist masters as Varo and Magritte, but picture-book aficionados–children included–are likely to associate these sophisticated, sensitive acrylics with other kid-friendly art by the likes of Anthony Browne and Chris Van Allsburg. Every image, from first to last, gives viewers plenty to ponder in their quieter moments, and older readers with artistic sensibilities will be as inspired as their younger siblings. Gr. 3-6. In a companion to Imagine a Night (2003), Gonsalves offers a new series of remarkable paintings that fool the eye in transparent yet intriguing ways. Each double-page spread presents a large picture and Thomson's brief text, such as "imagine a day . . . when you can dive down through branches or swim up to the sun." In this case, the acrylic painting depicts a scene in which a large tree is clearly reflected in the calm waters of a river or a lake. Three children climb out of the boat and along the reflection of the tree branches, toward the shore. In another painting, children walk along a picket fence, which almost imperceptibly turns into a city skyline that features the Chrysler Building. The text, though often lyrical, adds less to the book than the detailed pictures, which will stimulate wonder and imagination. An intriguing introduction to the surreal in art, this large-format book will fascinate children and adults with its realistic depiction of logical impossibilities. Carolyn Phelan

About the Author
Sarah L. Thomson's other books include The Dragon's Son, which was named one of the best science fiction, fantasy, and horror books of 2001 by Voice of Youth Advocates; Stars and Stripes; and Imagine a Night. She lives in Maine.

Rob Gonsalves grew up drawing images from his imagination. Before becoming a full-time artist, Mr. Gonsalves worked as an architect. He began exhibiting paintings in Toronto in 1990, and his work is now shown throughout North America and beyond. His picture books are Imagine a Place, Imagine a Night, and Imagine a Day, which was the recipient of the Governor General’s Literary award. He currently lives in Ontario, Canada.

Amazing to read and look at!

This book is one of the greatest books I've read and reviewed this year!

In its poetic simplistic sense, each verse brings new meaning and clear thought to a basic 3-4 word line. Along with the illustrations, done in an almost salvadore dali method, the pictures are created amongst themselves. A tall bridge slowly becomes people standing on each other helping build the bridge. A man studying a map becomes children diving off into a part of the map and flying over beautiful land. My descritions don't do justice to the beautiful artwork expressed inside these pages. Superb artwork by Rob Gonsalves!

imagine a day.....

when roots drink up rivers,

twigs tangle in clouds,

and a tree is a ladder

between earth and air.

This is a must read for children and will also be enjoyed by adults.

Better as an art book for adults

Brightly colored, surreal illustrations by Rob Gonsalves are lovely and interesting for adults and children and definately evoke emotions. Small children may find the perspectives a bit edgy.

The text will definatly evoke more for adults than children but does encourage readers of all ages to use their imaginations. This book may be dificult for beginning readers to decipher on their own but would be very nice as a read-together book.

This is a companion book to Imagine a Night by the same author and illustrator.

A book for the coffee table

The absolutely tremendous illustrations make this book interesting to all ages...especially adults. We keep it on the coffee table and company of all ages pick it up to get swept away by the imaginative book.
