Well written and practical - great at making a complex topic clear and interesting

If you're interested in global trade management (GTM) systems, this is definitely a book you'll want to check out. Compared to most technical books, this one is written in a style which is much more conversational, and so it's quite easy to read. I read through it in a weekend without getting bored or bogged down in excessive technical detail. This book focuses on sanctioned party list (SPL) screening and import/export licensing, which are two critical areas for ensuring a compliant supply chain. There are two things about this book which I particularly like. Firstly, when they review the technical settings for the GTS product, they provide useful guidance for when you might want to configure the product one way versus the other. I've seen many SAP books where they have pages and pages of screen shots of the settings, but make no effort to tell you what the settings affect, or which ones you might want to avoid or use only in unique circumstances. Secondly, there is a lot of great practical advice on how to implement robust SPL and licensing business processes in concert with the GTS product. This information is applicable even if your company is using a tool other than SAP GTS. The tips and advice are mixed in well with screen shots from GTS, and with references to external sources such as government web sites where you can find additional information. For instance, there's a section mapping out a robust approach for analyzing and reviewing an address that GTS has blocked against an SPL entity, including links to OFAC, BIS, and other organizations that manage these lists. Since my background is in IT (and not Trade Compliance) I found this aspect of the book particularly valuable. Whether you're looking for specific insight on SAP GTS or a more general background on what global trade management software is all about, I'd definitely recommend this book.

A book for all seasons

Full of wit and wisdom, success and failure, heartache and joy, Risking It is a book for all seasons. Hoerr weaves the narrative of his life through timeless life lessons, usually learned the hard way. The book is extremely readable and Hoerr's stories are engaging, interesting, and fun.

What I found truly wonderful about the text was that Hoerr refuses to play the hero and relish in his many business accomplishments. Rather than that, he writes about the difficulty, stress, and hard work he endured on the road to becoming the person and businessman he felt called to be.

Overall this is a highly inspirational read. It is clear that Hoerr has a deep sense of faith and purpose. It was intriguing to see how he has integrated the realms of faith and business into his life. The book spoke to a deep place in my soul that longs to see this type of integration within my own life. This is one of those books that I plan to reread every couple years to be inspired and to remind myself to keep taking risks.

So you are thinking of risking it in the world of business? If so, make sure you read Risking It: An Intersection of Faith and Work, a memoir by business entrepreneur Tim Hoerr. Author of Thank God It’s Monday! A Toolkit for Aligning Your Lifevision and Your Work, an older and wiser Tim Hoerr is back to tell us more about the journey that necessitates a life of risk. It is not all good! Perhaps the best parts of the memoir tell us what direction Tim took when he hit bottom in Southern California after a professional life full of success up to that point. Striking out on his own Mr. Hoerr soon learned that the solo journey can be a hard one, as well as a lonely one. As it turned out, business opportunities that seemed sure proved illusionary. How bad did it get? At its worse, Tim contemplated returning to the family lawn care business of his youth. What he did turn to was his faith. Anti-Goldilocks problem

Coverage Level: This books is not a mathematically rigorous coverage of RDB theory. It is not a to-the-point pragmatic information dump for practitioners. Instead it seems to land in the middle as a textbook for one of the IT certifications that blossomed in the late 90s or DB design class in an associates degree program. However, if that's what you are looking for then this good book.

Topic Coverage: The title is an ordered listing of topic coverage quality, depth and enthusiasm. Design >> App Dev > Admin.
The book is, without exception, overly verbose; however, the more detailed breakdown is...
- SQL: 3/5 Required intro for a book of this sort but better covered in any number of O'Reilly etc books.
- ER diagrams: 5/5 Best I've read but I'm not sure if ER diagrams are really a topic to hang one's hat on.
- Scheme design: 4/5 Well covered but a futile topic to teach IMHO, requires first hand failures to learn.
- Normalization: 5/5 Really belongs in this book between set theory and practitioner texts on RDMSs.

we used this book as main book for my graduate class, it is hard to follow, programming examples are not explained well, information scattered all over, it jumps between chapters for information.

While the content of the book is fine, the problems are absolutely horrible. Mannino frequently leaves out important information needed to solve the problems, makes typographical errors, references the wrong dates, jumps between different chapters and many other things.

On the Chapter 3 assignment for example there are TWO number 7's. One is hidden inside of 6.

I would highly not recommend this book.

Excellent Textbook on the subject:Also a good reference

This excellent book covers more than the basics of exercise physiology with hundreds of references to studies, charts and graphs. Everything, it seemed to me, was backed by empirical evidence. There is still much to be learned in this field, but I think anyone interested in the subject would do well to own this textbook. It is written on an introductory college level, in my opinion. I rated it 5 stars based on the presentation of the material and sound scientific basis for ideas presented.

I bought this book 2 months ago. It has a lot of chapters explaining different subjects, such as nutrition, VO2 max etc. I definitely recommend it to university's students who want to learn more about exercise physiology, nutrition and how the human's body system works.

About the Author
Amanda Sohan was born in the heart of New York City to a set of parents from British Guyana. While growing up with one foot steeped in the strict cultural boundaries her parents held dear and the other rooted in modern teenage American angst, reading and writing became the main medium for her journey toward freedom. In her dark poetry she grew to love the meaningful depths hidden in a collaboration of words. There was nothing more odd than the music she and her only sister Rowena grew up with; two American, West Indian girls bumping to the sound of Eazy E as Video Music Box flashing across the tube. Her teenage years, a graphic rebellion of words that could sneak under the radar of her parents watchful eye. How ironic that her first work would be a gentle, humorous children's book. But stay turned as she intends to showcase her more adult side in her second book entitled HIM.

There is a story about the Kazakhstan trickster Aldar-Kose and there are riddles from Uzbekistan to test the wits of young readers, such as "One eye and a sharp tooth" (answer: a needle). The selections are illustrated with primitive, full-color paintings done with a thick and exuberant brush. The cover art employs especially brilliant colors in its depiction of a rapt family seated around a samovar while an elderly man regales them with stories. A dozen tales from the nomadic cultures of Central Asia for young readers

"Tales Told in Tents: Stories from Central Asia" serves as a nice little reminder that there were storytellers who lived in the region between the Middle East and the Far East. Sally Pomme Clayton takes her dozen stories from the steppes, mountains, deserts and cities of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Tadijkistan and Afghanistan. These are lands that have been in the news in recent years more than before, but we hardly hear about stories from their culture. That these twelve tales were told in tents signifies that they represent nomadic cultures, who endures sorching summer suns and driving winter snows by living in tents that could keep them cool in one season and snug in another. However, like all other cultures, the storyteller was an important figure and the stories that were told were treasured.

"A Whole Brain" (Kazakhstan) tells what happened on the seventh day when God finished making the world and realized he had forgotten to give human beings brains. "The Secret of Flet" (Turkmenistan) is what two brothers discover when one stubs his toe on a sharp rock. "Blue Sky, White Wing" (Central Asia) is is a poem reflecting the old saying, "The sky is your father, the earth is your mother." "The Girl Who Cried a Lake" (Kyrgyzstan) is what happens when the Khan's daughter falls in love with the young hunter who catches her when the girls play kiss-chase on horseback (think Romeo & Juliet). "The Carpet of Dreams" (Afghanistan) is the story of Arif, who dreams of traveling the silk road and explains the tradition of always weaving a mistake into a carpet on purpose, to show that only God can make something that is truly perfect. "Riddle Bazaar" (Uzbekistan) are eight riddles, such as "One eye and a sharp tooth") (yes, the answers are provided in the back).

"The Bag of Trickness" (Kazakhstan) tells how the trickster Aldar-Kose with his coat of seventy holes and ninety patches, tricks a rich man. "Zarina's Orchard" (Tadjikistan) is about Zarina and her thirty-nine sisters, and how she wishesd they could bring the river to them, instead of them all going to the river. This story involves a Dev, which is not a good thing. "The Heart of Your Friend" (Kazahkstan) is a poem based on a Kazakh folksong. "Father of Stories, Horse of Songs" (Central Asia) tells of Korkut, a young man who wanted his horse to carry him away from Death. Korkut would live a long time and become known as Dede Korkut, father or all the stories being sung by storytellers today. "The Fountain of Life" (Central Asia) is the story of Al Khadir (the Green One), whom we met earlier in this book, and shows that eternal life does indeed exist.

Clayton learned these stories by traveling through Central Asia, talking and sharing stories with storytellers in different lands. Following their tradition, she has made these stories her own. Clayton provides notes About the Stories in the back of the book, to explain where they came from and other interesting tidbits and additional sources. Sophie Herxheimer, who did the colorful illustrations for this book, also provides a two-page map of Central Asia, so that you know where these lands are to be found in relation to Turkey, Iran, Russian, China, and the rest of their neighbors. A Glossary of key names and turms, mostly those translates from the native languages of these people

These twelves tales bring the culture of Central Asia to life and I have little doubt that for most young readers (and their teachers or parents), this will be their first exposure to stories from those lands, which is why in the end I round up on "Tales Told in Tents." Through out the book Clayton provides proverbs, sayings and assorted words of interest, such as those written on a bowl in Herxheimer's final painting: "My tales I have told them, your pocket shall hold them...If they are bitter of if they are sweet carry them away and bring them back--along with a dish of rice and raisins."

Buried treasure!

I almost didn't get this. I am so glad I did. I have a whole library of mythology and folktale books and this is one of the most well written. I almost didn't get it because it had so few reviews or description. I just gambled because I liked the idea of having something on Central Asia, given that I lived there for a time. The text is lively and very well written. The stories are fun and accessible to children. Very high-quality writing. The illustrations are good too, very descriptive and child-friendly. If I could have a book like this on every regional mythology I want to cover, I would have reached the ideal.

A wonderful collection of tales. One of them, Carpet of Dreams, is a favorite of storytellers. These tales, collected by a storyteller, are great for common core in schools. However, the reason to read these tales are because they are wonderful stories.
