Never Outdated: Fasting and Prayer For Today

I have heard and seen Steven Brooks on Sid Roth and read his book on angels. I could not wait to sit down and read this book. Steven not only gives scriptural backing needed for fasting and prayer, but also gives numerous examples of what happens when we fast and pray. His take on Franklin Hall's comment about fasting and prayer being like nuclear power is commendable. He eloquently elaborates on Hall's assertion and really makes fasting come alive.

Pastors and speakers, there are quotes by Charles Finney, Dwight L. Moody, Andrew Murray, John Wesley, A.A. Allen, Johnathan Edwards, and Martin Luther. Steven Brooks walks in a miracle-filled life, yet hungers for the still small voice of God. Quotes mean nothing to Steven without the power of God backing up his ministry.

I like the information on The Apostle Thomas, who ministered in India, modern day Pakistan, Iran, and even China. Steven visited the cave in which The Apostle Thomas lived before he was martyred. There he saw memorial signs detailing the healing of the blind, the lame, the lepers, and those who were raised form the dead. Awesome!

Steven tells us great stories about Job and Charles Spurgeon. He also includes a journal on a 21-day fast. I would love to see him write another abook on fasting, telling the stories of what has happened in his church after a called fast for his conregation.

I can't say enough about this book. This is a book to re-read over and over until the scriptures and accompanying stories move from your head into your heart. Don't be surprised to see miracles in your life if you do! Get this book and share this book! Jesus is coming soon! You know you need breakthroughs! FAST AND PRAY.

Better Than Expected

I ordered this after seeing him talk on Sid Roth. He believes the power of fasting to reach spiritual breakthrough. I felt this book would help me reach a greater anointing since I have encountered strong manifestations of the spirit that can't be denied at certain ministries. Steve shares some of his supernatural visitations from Jesus and miracles (which I trust are true), and from other saints who fasted. He outlines how to fast and gives biblical verses. He doesn't go overboard on the biblical verses which I liked. He mentioned the necessary ones and a few others relating to what he was talking about. He recommends you should drink water or juice when fasting, and thinks that Jesus drank water in the desert during his 40 day fast. I don't know if I agree with this, since the bible doesn't say he drank anything. He gives an example where a saint passed out when he tried an extended fast without water. But he also gives a supernatural example of a saint,Padro Pio, who fasted all the time but weighed 190 lbs, and actually gained weight when fasting. This book outweighed my expectations and gave me a good perception how to fast. At end he gives a 21 day journal of one of his personal fasts. This is good because it shows his honesty and human weaknesses. He doesn't give a fake view that it will be easy and all your dreams will come true. He does guarantee that when combined with a prayer life, earnestly seeking God, it will draw you closer into God's presence.

My name is Geoff Sant and I am the translator of this novel.

A previous commenter mistakenly claimed that "The Kouga Ninja Scrolls" is manga; he has confused this novel with the manga "Basilisk: The Kouga Ninja Scrolls." Rather, "The Kouga Ninja Scrolls" is a translation of the novel by Yamada Futaro, which has been the direct basis of endless manga and movies, including "Basilisk," "Shinobi," and "The Ninja Scrolls." The influence of "The Kouga Ninja Scrolls" extends far beyond its immediate derivations, however. "The Kouga Ninja Scrolls" was the forerunner and inspiration for much of modern Japanese fantasy -- Yamada Futaro could be described as the granddaddy of Japanese fantasy.

Briefly, the novel tells the story of two clans of supernatural ninjas forced to fight each other by the ruler of Japan. Meanwhile, a young man and woman from the opposing clans have fallen in love and wish to put an end to the conflict.

Yamada Futaro's writing style is distinct from both Western fantasy authors -- and is even distinct from the novel's manga adaptations. Yamada Futaro based his ninja wars upon Japanese history, and quotes real historical documents about ninjas, warfare, and even poetry. Yamada Futaro -- who had attended medical school -- also uses physics and biology to "explain" the ninjas' supernatural powers. These explanations are fascinating, and go far beyond the simplistic "bitten by a radioactive spider" explanations that one finds in the West.

Yamada Futaro explores complex themes, such as: Does one blindly obey leaders or challenge them? What is the purpose of war? Is homogeneity dangerous? He explores these issues so subtly that the casual reader may miss them, too focused upon supernatural ninja battles. I suspect that every reader will have his or her favorite ninja -- perhaps the moss-covered master assassin Amayo, or the wild-haired Mino Nenki, who uses his hair to wield weapons or to swing through trees. I will say no more here, and leave the surprises to you.

To sum up, Yamada Futaro's style is unique -- it can not be accurately captured even by the manga adaptations of it. I can only hope that I have captured his spirit. This is the first Japanese fantasy novel Del Rey has published in English. If you would like to see more Japanese fantasy novels translated, please support their effort.

This is a great book.

It is such a great book that it inspired several derivations from the original story.
It is also the influence for anything that makes martial artists into super powered beings.

This is a hand drawn anime that is fantastic. The detail and action sequences are very high quality.
I spotted clips of this on MTV back in the days when MTV was new and made 'cool' stuff.

This is a very entertaining action movie.
When watching this movie which is like a combination superhero/ninja story, I noticed alot of the super powers and character names were similar to 'Ninja scroll'. The internets eventually led me to this book. I ordered it and it was awesome.

Amazing story and great translation

I like supernatural novels, and "The Kouga Ninja Scrolls" is the best fantasy novel I have ever read. Frankly, I'm always cautious about reading translated books, because so many of them twist the meaning and style of the original version. Because I can read a little Japanese, I checked this translation against the original as I read it. I was incredibly impressed -- the translation is accurate, while also being smooth, beautifully written, and an authentic description of medieval Japan.

Before reading this book, I watched the movie ("Shinobi") and was touched by the story. Reading the book, however, was an even more powerful experience. By the end, I was hanging onto every word, and my heart was thumping with excitement. This is a great story and a great translation! It is a must-read book for everybody who enjoys fantasy novels or Japanese literature. Those of us who enjoy fantasy are lucky to have a translator like this, and even more lucky to have such an amazing novel available in English. I promise you that this novel will hit you emotionally, and leave you dreaming of ninja battles and lost love.

A very interesting survey of Israel's history

I agree with a previous reviewer about the number of typographical errors in the book and I even saw a number of run on sentences, more so than I am used to in a work from a major scholar. And the first 35 pages of the book constitutes some of the most turgid and boring prose I have ever read. But once the story enters the last two millenia of the BC era, the book picks up steam rapidly. It becomes a very engaging whirlwind trip through the Old Testament, with Kaiser stopping along the way to make some salient points anbout the historicity of particular passages. He discusses the date of the Exodus,, the historicity of the conquest of Israel, David's kingdom, and Josiah's discovery of the Book of the Law in the Temple. He also defends the early date for the book of Deuteronomy.
Kaiser is definitely swimming upstream in this book, as he is constantly dialoging with scholars who take less conservative positions on these matters, and he is virtually alone in the early dating of the Exodus. But he does an admirable job, and if you can make it past page 35, the book becomes very rich indeed.

So solid it can endure poor editing

I would place this book alongside John Bright's _A History of Israel_, as one of the top two books on the subject.

Liberal scholars will find it annoying because Kaiser begins from a different premise than do they. However, for those who consider the Bible a reliable historical document, this represents perhaps the most cogent defense of a conservative approach to historiography currently in print.

I would highly recommend it, and while I might write to the publisher and encourage them to revise the work for editing issues. I barely notice the typographical issues due to the clarity of the information and reasoning.

Currently my favorite biblical history reading material...and has been for some time.

Written in a clear and concise manner, this work also serves as an excellent resource to those searching for an introductory work on the background of the nation Israel during this period in Old Testament history.

About the Author
John received his MFA from Goddard College and his BFA in Ballet from Texas Christian University where he trained under Stephanie McFarlane Rand, Li Chou Cheng of Beijing Ballet and Fernando Bujones of American Ballet Theatre and the Royal Ballet. He has been teaching in New York City and around the country since 2000. His methodology has been taught at the Eastern Michigan University, Kalani Retreat Center in Hawaii, Atmananda Yoga Sequence, Baruch College, CUNY Hostos, CUNY in the Heights, Easton Mountain Retreat Center and every summer at the Ollom Movement Art Summer Program at Smith College. In 2010-2011, John Ollom was chosen as the Artist in Residence at the Eastern Michigan University Dance Department. Since 2002, John has served as the Artistic Director of Ollom Movement Art/Prismatic Productions, Inc. where he has choreographed such works as "The Catalyst", "Love and Longing", "The Journey", "John Ollom's The Journey", "Anatomy of Woman", "Dido and Aeneas", "The Other Species", "Love Stories", "Internal Landscapes", "Man of War", "M.U.D. (Men Under Dirt)", "Kuan Yin's Compassion", "Nemetona", "The Portal", and "Prisoner of My Projection". His choreography and direction can also be seen in the film "Karpos and Kalamos". John's work has been the subject of three documentary films: "Late Bloomers" by Annette Cyr, Professor of Art at the National University in San Diego; "The Making of M.U.D.: An Exploration of the Work of John Ollom and Ollom Movement Art" by Robert Kazmayer, MA; and, "There's Something About John" by Emma McCagg.

Diving deep into the Unconscious

This is a beautiful book, just the material object in your hand. It's colorfully illustrated and nicely designed. Some of the pages hold only short poems or aphorisms and it's easy to just riffle through the pages reading here and there, admiring the images of nature, of colorful abstracts, and especially of costumed (and not so costumed) dancers.

Internal Landscapes is a documentation of choreographer John Ollom's art and production. Within the book are descriptions of performances and art festivals. In that sense, it is like his portfolio or an art catalogue or program.

But it is also more than that because Ollom's dance performances are more than just "art." They are also psychological, archetypal experiences and adventures in consciousness. The book opens with a discussion of how John Ollom learned to use movement to elict deep experience in his dance students: Chapter 1 is titled "Psychological and Anthropological Findings." The stories in myth and legend--which often form the "libretto" of music and dance--have become canonized because they capture deep human experience and common patterns in life--as mythical, not logical. They speak to something deeper than the conscious mind. Movement is a way to sidestep logic and awaken the mythic unconscious mind. Dance creates what in other contexts would be called ritual, and like ritual, dance can bring repressed and denied stories to the surface. Movement and dance act as a kind of psychoanalytic trigger for opening the mind. And in performance, the observer is also called to follow the dancer into his or her own deep unconscious. The book's title "Internal Landscapes," of course, alludes to this power to reach into and waken the mind.

The writing style is a little inelegant at times, but this isn't literature or a book about writing. It's a book about the power of art and movement. A clumsy sentence here and there can be forgiven. I liked this book. I especially like John Ollom's intention to move art and dance into the realm of psychological medicine and transcendence. This is dance movement as yoga and contemplation. And beautifully done!

Simply Amazing

This is an excellent book for anyone in the arts, whether it is dance,acting,writing or painting. Once you read this book it becomes your reference book. It will help you excel in any creative work. It is definitely a must have. It is a amazing to say the least. I definitely recommend. It is a must read.

Naked Introspection

This is a wild inspirational journey into the creative process of the author and how he uses his pathos to break through artistically. I refrain from calling John Ollom a choreographer because he is so much more. Seer? Sage? Catalyst? All three? Perhaps. I am not a very introspective person and I shy away from psychobabble yet I could not put this book down. Of course, it did raise questions of self-doubt. I had the privilege of seeing M.U.D. performed live and yet I did not understand some of the imagery or symbolism that he so painstakingly detailed in the book. That of course is my own shortcoming and not a reflection of John’s brilliance. Nevertheless, both the performance and the book made me want to dance, or at least move to my own beat, perhaps even skyclad.
