This is the first comprehensive book covering the topic of materials science and its relationship to electrodeposition. It demonstrates how the principles of materials science can be used to explain various structures of electrodeposits and how these structures influence properties. Although the title sounds specific to electrodeposition, other coating technologies such as physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, plasma spraying and ion implantation are also covered. The reason for this is that growth of coatings and their performance from a materials science viewpoint have a great deal of commonality regardless of the technique used to deposit the film. The fascinating field of electrodeposition allows one to "tailor" the surface properties of a bulk material or, in the case of electroforming, the entire part. Deposits can be produced to meet a variety of demands of the designer. For this reason and for the possibilities that exist in terms of "new materials" for a variety of applications, a thorough understanding of materials science and principles is of the utmost importance. This book is intended to provide some of that understanding. The sequence of chapters in the book takes the reader from the substrate to the outer surface of the coating. It starts with the substrate (Hydrogen Embrittlement), then proceeds to the substrate/coating interface (Adhesion, Diffusion), then the bulk of the coating (Structure, Properties, Additives, Stress, Porosity) and finally to the environmental interface of the coating (Corrosion, Wear).

This is a really good book to learn about the various tests for electrodeposition. The book is succintly written and very practical in application. I would highly recommend this book to anybody who is new to electrodeposition and is interested in doing electrodeposition as a part of their research or in a industry. This book is very useful to me since i am trying to understand the mechanical properties in relation to the microstructure during electrodeposition.

Though Bloch survived the savage trench warfare of the First World War, he was shot by a Gestapo firing squad in 1944 for his participation in the Resistance. Amazing and dissappointing.

This really is a great easy short read. I highly recommend it if you are interested in a primary first hand account of being in the trenches of WWI. The author was a quite a hero in WWII. I will say it's amazingly disappointing as it ends terribly abruptly when he becomes ill so I didn't get as much as I wanted but that doesn't take away from whats there. There is no post war commentary or anything from that author as this was published long after he was killed by the Gestapo.

Great book!

I have to admit, I've read through bridal magazines for the past 35 years so I remember Randy Fenoli's gorgeous gowns from when he was a designer for the Diamond Collection. At a time when many gowns had the same predictable details, his designs stood out as unique, stunning and very elegant, with just the right amount of adornment. It's lovely to see a book devoted to the bride and the selection of that perfect dress. The book focuses on the fact that every bride is beautiful in her own way, and the right dress can showcase her best attributes and increase her confidence.

While it's disappointing that so many bridal salons only carry gowns in a limited range of sizes, Randy isn't afraid to tackle the variety of challenges that many women face when entering the bridal salon. The photos are gorgeous, the gowns and brides are varied and we are encouraged to find our inner beauty no matter what our size or age when getting married. The book is well thought out and there's a lot of valuable information relating to fabrics, laces, design features and even a section on quality and detail levels for different price points.

I would recommend this to any of my friends who are shopping for a bridal gown.

To find the dress for The Day

Randy Fenoli has created a book that brides who are determined to find the perfect dress would love. He has some very wise advice, even for mothers of the brides; but basically it is how to choose the perfect dress for your budget.

He does a very good job in explaining why some dresses are so different in price and has time lines for both the bride and groom of what needs to be done by when. He gives insider secrets and is successful in his attempts to give brides more self-confidence. There are pictures and short stories of brides in their twenties up to a 62 year old bride. They range from petite to full figured.
He explains his background and how he came to design and work with clothes; then he turns to the bride's story and how she needs to figure out what it is. The gowns themselves are explained from the different silhouettes to each element of the design and fabric.

He is thorough in so many ways; such as examining what will look good on each body type and also long or short necks, thin, full or short arms. There is even a list of words to describe a bride's tastes, which she can show her consultant to be able to find what she wants Accessories are explored and alterations too, and the emergency kit for the big day that will include supplies you might not think of such as double sided tape. There is a glossary and an index.

This would make a perfect gift for someone who wants to have that perfect wedding.

Will make a beautiful gift

I admit it - I'm hopelessly hooked on Say Yes to the Dress. I imagine I have seen a few episodes 4 times or more, but I never get tired of the fantasy, hype, occasional bitchery, and downright tearjerking emotion that goes into the selection of a bridal gown. (I doubt we will ever see a TV show or a book called It's Just a Dress.)

I will not be buying any more bridal gowns. My wedding is in the distant past, and I have sons. However, there will be daughters-in-law someday hopefully, and this is just the sort of gift I will want to give them. OK, it's a bit over the top but it's full of beautiful pictures and juicy details. One thing I love about the show is that the consultants welcome a challenge bride - be it physical, emotional, a family member or simply a time crunch, they are there just that little bit more for the bride who needs something extra. That attitude comes through in the pages of this book. There are many, many kinds of women in this world. Some of them glide through life. Most of them have some obstacles to overcome. Every bride has this one day that should absolutely make her feel special, and Randy is 100% up to the task of getting her into the right dress. His chatty tone and practical tips will give every bride an extra boost.

Is it really all about the dress? Should it be? All I know is, if the dress is wrong, the day can't be perfect. This book is a bit of escape and a bit of a how-to book. I call that a great combination.

A Series of Simple Exercises

This book is printed in China by Science and Technology Press. Compared to other Tai Chi and Chi Kung books, this one has many simple exercises and commentary to understand some of the workings of chi energy. There are charts in the back of the book that link the Dayan Qigong with Acupuncture Meridian points and useful lists of Chinese terminology so that you can perhaps decode other books on the subject. Two color pictures, one on the cover and one inside, show the author demonstrating his craft. There are a lot of useful and interesting notes throughout the book. While many Tai Chi books have this information, this one is fairly complete as a system. The author also shares the best times to practice to nourish different aspects of yourself, like 5am to 7am for promoting longevity and 11am to 1pm for nourishing the blood.

I wouldn't recommend trying to learn Da-Yen (Wild Goose) Ch'i Gung (Qigong) without a teacher. There are subtleties that aren't in the books - where you put your weight, for example. But if you're fortunate enough to have been able to learn this extremely powerful Ch'i Gung, this book can be very helpful as a reminder tool when you forget the details of a movement. And the general information is good - one sentence revealed to me why I was having more pain for awhile after I started the practice (shortly all gone). I found my copy in a Chinese bookstore. From the master herself, now passed on. I was lucky enough to visit her in Beijing a couple years before she left us at about 106 in 2002 (records don't go back far enough to be absolutely certain) after an incredibly tough life - still impressive and flexible and sharp as can be!
