First as the national director of a denominational short term missions program responsible for approximately 1000 churches nationwide, and now as the owner of a missions travel firm, I regularly keep a supply of Roger and Waynes' work 'MAXIMUM IMPACT SHORT TERM MISSION' handy to send to those desiring to truly MAXIMIZE their short term missions' program.

I consider this book a must-read for the individual desiring to prepare his/her team for a short term mission or service project, AND for the leader responsible for multiple teams or even an entire short term program. *** One thing that I especially appreciate about this work is that it helps you work through EVERY aspect of the short term mission. From initial planning to final debrief on return from the field, and continued strategic ministry for the years beyond.

We Used this as a textbook

Our mission committee at church reviewed many texts on mission trips, but ultimately adopted this one as the text for a several month study on improving missions. Well worth the time to read, but may need some time digest the information between chapters. Powerful!

This book is helpful, BUT very technical. Charts and organizational ideas. I did not find much spiritual help in it for the spiritual side of short term missions.

About the Author
Archana Prasad is Associate Professor at the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and was earlier a fellow of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. She has written extensively on tribal development, identity formation and local systems of natural resource conservation for scholarly as well as popular journals. Her books include 'Environmentalism and the Left: Contemporary Debates and Future Agenda in Tribal Areas' (2004); 'Tribal Livelihoods and Globalisation: Exploring the Potential of Non-Timber Forest Produce in Eastern and Central India' (2005), and an edited volume on 'Environment, Development and Society in Contemporary India: An Introduction' (2009).

Grade 3-6–Gonsalves awakens young readers from the twilight fantasy of Imagine a Night (S & S, 2003) and invites them to visit his evocative dreamscapes in broad daylight. The "wow" factor in every image is high, though some of the acrylic paintings pack more of a conceptual punch than others. The illustration that accompanies "imagine a day…/…when your house enfolds you/like a nest,/rocking gently/in the autumn wind" is definitely pretty neat. But "imagine a day…/…when you forget how to fall" is more deeply powerful, insightful, and visually demanding. The dust jacket copy indicates that Gonsalves's influences include such surrealist masters as Varo and Magritte, but picture-book aficionados–children included–are likely to associate these sophisticated, sensitive acrylics with other kid-friendly art by the likes of Anthony Browne and Chris Van Allsburg. Every image, from first to last, gives viewers plenty to ponder in their quieter moments, and older readers with artistic sensibilities will be as inspired as their younger siblings. Gr. 3-6. In a companion to Imagine a Night (2003), Gonsalves offers a new series of remarkable paintings that fool the eye in transparent yet intriguing ways. Each double-page spread presents a large picture and Thomson's brief text, such as "imagine a day . . . when you can dive down through branches or swim up to the sun." In this case, the acrylic painting depicts a scene in which a large tree is clearly reflected in the calm waters of a river or a lake. Three children climb out of the boat and along the reflection of the tree branches, toward the shore. In another painting, children walk along a picket fence, which almost imperceptibly turns into a city skyline that features the Chrysler Building. The text, though often lyrical, adds less to the book than the detailed pictures, which will stimulate wonder and imagination. He began exhibiting paintings in Toronto in 1990, and his work is now shown throughout North America and beyond. His picture books are Imagine a Place, Imagine a Night, and Imagine a Day, which was the recipient of the Governor General’s Literary award. He currently lives in Ontario, Canada.

Amazing to read and look at!

This book is one of the greatest books I've read and reviewed this year!

In its poetic simplistic sense, each verse brings new meaning and clear thought to a basic 3-4 word line. Along with the illustrations, done in an almost salvadore dali method, the pictures are created amongst themselves. A tall bridge slowly becomes people standing on each other helping build the bridge. A man studying a map becomes children diving off into a part of the map and flying over beautiful land. Better as an art book for adults

Brightly colored, surreal illustrations by Rob Gonsalves are lovely and interesting for adults and children and definately evoke emotions. Small children may find the perspectives a bit edgy.

The text will definatly evoke more for adults than children but does encourage readers of all ages to use their imaginations. This book may be dificult for beginning readers to decipher on their own but would be very nice as a read-together book.

This is a companion book to Imagine a Night by the same author and illustrator.

Interesting historical perspecting

This book was originally published in 1912. I'm not a medical professional, but I was astounded by how much detail was known about the internal workings of the body nearly 100 years ago without the technological advantages that we have today. I read the description of labor and delivery with great interest, since most births were accomplished at home in those times. You will chuckle at the prim and proper words that are chosen ("marital relations" rather than "sex") and the recommendations for how long a woman needs to recuperate. (The author recommends that for a hospital birth, the mother should not leave for at least 2 weeks, and that for a home birth, the mother should recuperate in bed for 4 weeks). I skipped over all the parts about nutrition and exercise - I probably missed a few gems there. Overall, though, I was impressed with how straightforward the author was with the facts, no matter how unpleasant they are. I consider this the century-old version of "The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy".

Even though this book would be so called"dated" it is full of info you wouldn't usually get. It explains everything you would want to know about in great detail. I am expecting my third child and learned things from this book I never knew. What you know is dated ignore but remember if they could have babies with this info then we certainly can knowing also modern medicine!
