About the Author
Amanda Sohan was born in the heart of New York City to a set of parents from British Guyana. While growing up with one foot steeped in the strict cultural boundaries her parents held dear and the other rooted in modern teenage American angst, reading and writing became the main medium for her journey toward freedom. In her dark poetry she grew to love the meaningful depths hidden in a collaboration of words. There was nothing more odd than the music she and her only sister Rowena grew up with; two American, West Indian girls bumping to the sound of Eazy E as Video Music Box flashing across the tube. Her teenage years, a graphic rebellion of words that could sneak under the radar of her parents watchful eye. How ironic that her first work would be a gentle, humorous children's book. But stay turned as she intends to showcase her more adult side in her second book entitled HIM.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-In this unusual collection, tales involving magical beings and flying carpets appear alongside prosaic explanations for the invention of felt and a legend about the origins of Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. There is a story about the Kazakhstan trickster Aldar-Kose and there are riddles from Uzbekistan to test the wits of young readers, such as "One eye and a sharp tooth" (answer: a needle). The selections are illustrated with primitive, full-color paintings done with a thick and exuberant brush. The cover art employs especially brilliant colors in its depiction of a rapt family seated around a samovar while an elderly man regales them with stories. By opening a window to folkloric traditions not previously explored in American children's books, Clayton provides much material to tantalize storytellers, listeners, and readers alike.-Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Public Library, NY

From Booklist
Gr. 2-4. In 12 traditional stories from the nomadic cultures of Central Asia, folklorist Clayton retells myth and folklore she heard in Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. The lively tales include epic creation myths, rhyming riddles, trickster tales, songs, and stories of magic carpets and music. The large picture book is illustrated with richly colored line-and-watercolor paintings that evoke Central Asian traditional culture, with settings ranging from deserts and mountains to rivers and cities. In "Zarina's Orchard" from Tadjikistan, the longest and one of the best stories, a bold, brave young woman fights the Dev, a demon with one red eye and a long black tongue. The backmatter includes a map, a glossary, and informal notes about each story and its connections. A rich resource, even for older readers, this anthology has stories that travel across the world. A dozen tales from the nomadic cultures of Central Asia for young readers
By Lawrance Bernabo
"Tales Told in Tents: Stories from Central Asia" serves as a nice little reminder that there were storytellers who lived in the region between the Middle East and the Far East. Sally Pomme Clayton takes her dozen stories from the steppes, mountains, deserts and cities of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Tadijkistan and Afghanistan. These are lands that have been in the news in recent years more than before, but we hardly hear about stories from their culture. That these twelve tales were told in tents signifies that they represent nomadic cultures, who endures sorching summer suns and driving winter snows by living in tents that could keep them cool in one season and snug in another. However, like all other cultures, the storyteller was an important figure and the stories that were told were treasured.

"A Whole Brain" (Kazakhstan) tells what happened on the seventh day when God finished making the world and realized he had forgotten to give human beings brains. "The Secret of Flet" (Turkmenistan) is what two brothers discover when one stubs his toe on a sharp rock. "Blue Sky, White Wing" (Central Asia) is is a poem reflecting the old saying, "The sky is your father, the earth is your mother." "The Girl Who Cried a Lake" (Kyrgyzstan) is what happens when the Khan's daughter falls in love with the young hunter who catches her when the girls play kiss-chase on horseback (think Romeo & Juliet). "The Carpet of Dreams" (Afghanistan) is the story of Arif, who dreams of traveling the silk road and explains the tradition of always weaving a mistake into a carpet on purpose, to show that only God can make something that is truly perfect. "Riddle Bazaar" (Uzbekistan) are eight riddles, such as "One eye and a sharp tooth") (yes, the answers are provided in the back).

"The Bag of Trickness" (Kazakhstan) tells how the trickster Aldar-Kose with his coat of seventy holes and ninety patches, tricks a rich man. "Zarina's Orchard" (Tadjikistan) is about Zarina and her thirty-nine sisters, and how she wishesd they could bring the river to them, instead of them all going to the river. This story involves a Dev, which is not a good thing. "The Heart of Your Friend" (Kazahkstan) is a poem based on a Kazakh folksong. "Father of Stories, Horse of Songs" (Central Asia) tells of Korkut, a young man who wanted his horse to carry him away from Death. Korkut would live a long time and become known as Dede Korkut, father or all the stories being sung by storytellers today. "The Fountain of Life" (Central Asia) is the story of Al Khadir (the Green One), whom we met earlier in this book, and shows that eternal life does indeed exist.

Clayton learned these stories by traveling through Central Asia, talking and sharing stories with storytellers in different lands. Following their tradition, she has made these stories her own. Clayton provides notes About the Stories in the back of the book, to explain where they came from and other interesting tidbits and additional sources. Sophie Herxheimer, who did the colorful illustrations for this book, also provides a two-page map of Central Asia, so that you know where these lands are to be found in relation to Turkey, Iran, Russian, China, and the rest of their neighbors. A Glossary of key names and turms, mostly those translates from the native languages of these people

These twelves tales bring the culture of Central Asia to life and I have little doubt that for most young readers (and their teachers or parents), this will be their first exposure to stories from those lands, which is why in the end I round up on "Tales Told in Tents." Through out the book Clayton provides proverbs, sayings and assorted words of interest, such as those written on a bowl in Herxheimer's final painting: "My tales I have told them, your pocket shall hold them...If they are bitter of if they are sweet carry them away and bring them back--along with a dish of rice and raisins."

Buried treasure!
By Arie Farnam
I almost didn't get this. I am so glad I did. I have a whole library of mythology and folktale books and this is one of the most well written. I almost didn't get it because it had so few reviews or description. I just gambled because I liked the idea of having something on Central Asia, given that I lived there for a time. The text is lively and very well written. The stories are fun and accessible to children. Very high-quality writing. The illustrations are good too, very descriptive and child-friendly. If I could have a book like this on every regional mythology I want to cover, I would have reached the ideal.

A wonderful collection of tales
By Claudia Reder
A wonderful collection of tales. One of them, Carpet of Dreams, is a favorite of storytellers. These tales, collected by a storyteller, are great for common core in schools. However, the reason to read these tales are because they are wonderful stories.

Juana la Loca, by Linda Carlino

Queen Juana I of Spain was the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella and sister of Catherine of Aragon. She was contracted to marry Philip the Fair, a known womaniser and political schemer, and fell passionately in love with him at first sight. The marriage was very passionate and stormy but his early death made it short-lived. When her mother died Juana should have reigned as Queen of Castile but she was callously denied power and status throughout her life, most of which she spent imprisoned. by the three men in her life who sought power for themselves: her husband Philip, her father Ferdinand and her son Charles. She faced their relentless physical and mental cruelty with courage and determination, her spirited resistance earning her, unjustly, the nickname by which she is remembered, Juana la Loca (Joan the Mad.)

Interesting story though somewhat hard to read due to typos, grammar and dropped sentences
By KellyG
This was a wonderful story about a woman from history that I knew little about. The story was told well but I wondered if some things were lost in translation. There were many misspelled words and even phrases and sentences that were left unfinished. It was an exercise in imagination to try to determine what the author wanted to convey. For some reason, this problem seemed to be worse at the beginning of the book. I'm glad I stuck with it and got through to learn the life story of Queen Juana.

Great book but....
By Barbara Roderick
I really did love the story but it really needs careful repair or editing of the Kindle edition. Every so often the words get jumbled over the course of several lines to a number of paragraphs. It isn't impossible to follow the story but it is annoying to come across lines of nonsense. Otherwise a great story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Europe Between the Oceans: 9000 BC-AD 1000, by Barry Cunliffe

In this magnificent book, distinguished archaeologist Barry Cunliffe reframes our entire conception of early European history, from prehistory through the ancient world to the medieval Viking period. Cunliffe views Europe not in terms of states and shifting political land boundaries but as a geographical niche particularly favored in facing many seas. These seas, and Europe’s great transpeninsular rivers, ensured a rich diversity of natural resources while also encouraging the dynamic interaction of peoples across networks of communication and exchange. The development of these early Europeans is rooted in complex interplays, shifting balances, and geographic and demographic fluidity.

Drawing on archaeology, anthropology, and history, Cunliffe has produced an interdisciplinary tour de force. His is a bold book of exceptional scholarship, erudite and engaging, and it heralds an entirely new understanding of Old Europe.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Cunliffe, emeritus professor of archeology at Oxford, colorfully weaves history, geography archeology and anthropology into a mesmerizing tapestry chronicling the development of Europe. The sheer size of the European coastlines, as well as the inland rivers pouring into these seas, enabled many groups to move easily from one place to another and establish cultures that flourished commercially. Between 2800 and 1300 B.C., for example, Britain, the Nordic states, Greece and the western Mediterranean states were bound together by their maritime exchange of bronze, whose use in Britain and Ireland had spread by 1400 B.C. to Greece and the Aegean. From 800 to 500 B.C.—the three hundred years that changed the world—the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and Carthaginians emerged from relative obscurity into major empires whose struggles to control the seas were for the first time recorded in writing. Cunliffe points out that each oceanic culture developed unique sailing vessels for the kinds of commerce peculiar to it. Richly told, Cunliffe's tale yields a wealth of insights into the earliest days of European civilization. Illus., maps. (Sept.)

Review
"'When history is written in this way, conventional priorities are overthrown... An admirable distillation of an enormous amount of evidence - full of what is beautiful, interesting and true.' (James Fenton, The Sunday Times (London)) 'To somebody like myself, who enjoys 'big history' (and prehistory), this supplies it with a vengeance... The author is one of our greatest living archaeologists, writing at the height of his powers and with decades of accumulated knowledge brought into play. The result is a cascade of maps, illustrations and (above all) vivid, informed, assured prose.' (Ronald Hutton, History Today) 'Barry Cunliffe's latest book represents the synthesis of half a century studying the archaeology of Europe... He has established a pre-eminent reputation for mastery of a huge corpus of Europe-wide data, and an ability to construct panoramic overviews of past epochs. His latest book is his most ambitious so far.' (Current Archaeology) 'Nothing less than a masterwork, a gloriously sweeping survey of the early history of Europe drawn by a scholar and archaeologist at the very peak of his powers.' (Alistair Moffat, The Scotsman)"

Great book, synthesizing many years and fields
By K. Kehler
This is a remarkable overview of an important period in human history in what we now call Europe (basically the period from the end of the last ice age to the medieval period, and covering the beginnings of farming and the rise of cities and settlements: the Neolithic and post-Neolithic period). This is also a summary of archeologist Cunliffe's other works, now contained between two covers. The author discusses everything from trade, migration and the domestication of animals to art and literature -- with Homer's great oral tales in particular getting very good treatment -- and of course languages and warfare. It is well written (on paper is of an exceptional quality) and filled with wonderful crisp and clear photographs, as well as charts and diagrams. The only possible downside is the sheer weight of the book, making it resemble a coffee book, though it isn't that. So, all in all, a great work about an important subject -- the big picture of how the West came to be the West we know -- by a learned and lucid expert in the field(s), pitched at the intelligent ordinary reader, to boot.

A great treasure
By Robert J. Melton
This book is a great treasure - if I was headed for a desert island it would be one of the ten books I would take with me. (And that is after a good forty years of reading history and literature) Cunliffe gives a wide and deep summary of Europe's growth and evolution from the paleolithic to the Roman empire. Unlike so many historians with narrow views, he weaves together findings from archaeology, climatology, geographpy, medical genetics, social history and ecology. His prose is a miracle of clarity, conciseness and sparkled here and there with a little wit and mischief. He highlights the big controversies, lets you know where he stands on them, but is never dogmatic or overbearing. He writes from a long career in this field, yet everything in the book is right up to date. The maps, charts and photos are all a graphic designer's dream - perfectly rendered and always completely integrated with the text. In fact, the book is a publisher's masterpiece. I could go on and on - but just go out and get this!!

Fascinating, smooth reading
By History buff
Along with Mithen's After The Ice, this is the most enjoyable book on European prehistory that I have read. Filled with colorful maps and photos that follow along with the text descriptions, written elegantly and with enough detail to not seem too "dumbed-down" for the layman. If every professor or researcher published their books in such an appealing and vibrant fashion, it would cut into the ratings of the Science and History channels.

JOB DESCRIPTION: DELPHIC ORACLE, CURRENTLY SERVING
TO-DOS: STOP APOCALYPSE. ASAP!In this action-packed historical thriller, an ancient, extremely dark religion gains terrifying vitality and power, as the pieces of a 3,000-year-old Sumerian jigsaw puzzle fall into place.

A clay tablet turns up, containing a prophecy of demons, a snake goddess, and the birth of a “disruptive” miraculous child. A prophecy so dangerous the tablet was smashed to bits, and the shards scattered to all the cities of the ancient world to prevent reassembling, until a Jesuit scholar's vision sets the prophecy in motion in Paris, where the pieces have lain for centuries, half a world and three millennia away from their source.

Yet very close to the current home of Lisa Emmer, chosen the Pythia, head of the Delphi Agenda, because of her gift of sight, and trained in ancient world studies by a mentor who promised to "teach you life"; more accurately, he might have said "teach you to save the world from evil.” Prophecy is Lisa’s bailiwick—she’s the modern-day Delphic Oracle, head of a secret organization whose purpose is to protect the world from rogue conspiracies within the Church.

Over the centuries, the Delphi Agenda has prevented the cult of Ophis Sophia from the fulfillment of their doomsday prophecy several times. Now, in a suspenseful race against an alignment of planets and comets that signals the "wondrous child's" impending birth, Lisa speeds to find and protect the mother and child. If she’s too late, “disruption” will take on a devastating new meaning.

Fans of intrepid women sleuths will love Lisa, as well as anyone smitten with the romance of the ancient world, and action-adventure in historical fiction and thriller conspiracies, (especially those involving the Catholic church, like The DaVinci Code). Sure to please fans of Dan Brown, Steve Berry, and the first Lisa Emmer thriller, The Delphi Agenda.

Master Storyteller
By Brent G. Barker
Ancient mysteries brought to life through the assembly of clay shards gathering dust in old boxes in Paris. Fun? You bet. Does the tablet stir the rebirth or the new birth of spells and destinies? Won’t spoil it. Follow the intrepid detectives, the disciples, the guardians, the spirits, the agony of an innocent girl hidden in a monastery pregnant with the key. To something sacred? Profane? The future? Great read by a man who loves to write and who knows how to take you on a thrilling ride, a master story teller with the bent of an archeologist who wants to blow the dust off ancient mysteries of the Middle East.

Memorable Villains and Locales
By Diane Skelton
A great read for anyone who likes ancient religions, mythology, mystics, oracles, and international intrigue. In this contemporary mystery, the Delphi Group attempts to stop a major international religious shift being birthed by an ancient, ruthless sect. The events evolve in the streets of Paris and the mountains and medieval monasteries of Spain. The subject matter is reminiscent of Dan Brown's symbol books, while the depth of information about art and masterpieces reminds me of Jeffrey Archer’s False Impressions. The story has great pacing, accelerating as the novel progresses. Definitely a memorable read with well-crafted descriptions and seriously scary villains.

Enjoyed reading a great deal
By elkiii
I received an advanced review copy of this book from the publisher, and just finished reading. I enjoyed reading a great deal and rate it a 4 to a 4.5. It kept my interest from beginning to end with an unexpected twist (that I assume will hopefully lead to future books in the series). There were what were obviously references to a story prior to this one, but the book stood on its own. I have purchased the prior book and am just beginning to read. I would not be surprised if this book were made into a movie... if so I would see it.
