Managing Geographic Information System Projects (Spatial Information Systems), by William E. Huxhold, Allan G. Levinsohn

Most of the current publications on geographic information systems (GIS) focus on its mechanics, technology, and project-specific applications. This much-needed book, however, introduces the reader to GIS implementation from a management and organizational perspective. GIS is becoming increasingly popular and is evolving from a mapping tool used for support functions to a technology capable of redesigning land administration. In other sectors, information technology has had a dramatic effect on operations. This book examines those cases, and applies them to GIS paradigm, stressing that GIS technology itself does not cause improvements in operational efficiency and effectiveness, but enables changes that can facilitate these improvements. The bulk of the book guides the reader through the necessary frameworks and techniques needed to plan, design, and implement GIS as a technological infrastructure within an organization. Managing Geographic Information System Projects, is suitable for both students and professionals who want to know how to successfully implement GIS technology in organizations.

Review
"[P]resents a realistic picture of detailed tasks that must be addressed in order to successfully manage a GIS...a wealth of valuable information...Huxhold and Levinsohn present some excellent ideas, conceptual frameworks, principles, guidance, and experience....[T]his book is the only one to date that substantially addresses the tasks involved in GIS management."--URISA Journal

"[A]n interesting, well-written volume...[with] smooth writing, appropriate definitions, good examples, an emphasis on strategic thinking and vision, and a thorough analysis of what an effective organizational mobilization implies....The book is encyclopedic in using existing literature, outlining management approaches, and explicating standards and criteria. I suggest it be used for its obvious relevance to GIS practitioners. Indeed, it is an excellent manual for planning, managing, and improving the climate of the increasing armory of decision support systems, especially regarding rapidly changing information technologies."--GIS World

"Good, to-the-point approach! Doesn't get bogged down with techno jargon. A good, concise how-it-works and how-to-use-it format. The application is one we don't often see in these kinds of books."--James Segedy, Ball State University

"As the field of GIS matures , there is a trend to downplay the management, implementation, and organizational context of Geographic Information Systems and consider the long-term aspects from a practical and pragmatic perspective. This book starts us down that path."--James Lein, Ohio University

"A good addition to GIS literature. This much-needed book fills a gap in the discipline."--Indrajith Wijayratne, Michigan Tech University

"A much needed book which appears to nicely draw together a wealth of information."--Daniel F. Wagner, University of South Carolina

Review

This fascinating new volume compiled by Rowland Atkinson explores many of the central issues raised by "deviant" conduct, and exposes the problematic nature of the project that is criminology. This is a book about boundaries. The boundaries of: behaviour (transgressive, deviant, harmful or criminal); of public perception (the moral, immoral and amoral); and of social reaction (from censure to denial).

This book will be of huge value to students studying within, or on the boundaries between, criminology, criminological psychology, socio-legal studies and the sociology of deviance.

Professor Tim Newburn, London School of Economics, UK

Shades of Deviance crackles with intellectual energy and the sparks of critical analysis. Chapter to chapter, it traverses a remarkable range of crime and deviance, from the most innocent of acts to the most egregious of offenses. Better yet, Shades of Deviance asks an essential question: which is which?

Jeff Ferrell, Texas Christian University, USA, and University of Kent, UK

Shades of Deviance is a strikingly original collection of thought-provoking work by some of the most creative thinkers in criminology. It pushes boundaries, raises provocative questions, and will surely help to shape debates on deviance and social harm for years to come.

Elliott Currie, University of California, Irvine, USA

Shades of Deviance never loses its focus, it never shies away from a gritty or contested argument and it never allows the reader to lose interest. It is fast paced, moving and emotional. It is based in the here and now of the social world, without forgetting how we got here.

― Darren Woodward, Prison Service Journal

Another great reference from Amy Gillett
By silacin
The daily conversation examples are so common that you can easily find yourself in one of these situations and use the knowledge you recently gained from reading this book! If you're new to the USA, use this book as your daily dictionary. If you're a seasoned ESL speaker, then I urge you to challenge yourself, because you are likely to find more than a few examples in which you will catch yourself saying "oh, I didn't know that". It's a fun read, I highly recommend it.

I really love this book
By FLORIAN BALTAC
Speaking a language without using idioms and expressions is neither expressive nor full in meaning. Amy does a great job writing this book because it teaches us the idioms we need for daily life situations. Each lesson presents good stories and the associated idioms and expressions that go with them. Language lens is a grammar refresher and expression practice followed by quizzes all do a good job to practice what we learned. The audio CD that comes with the book helps the reader with the pronunciation and it can be played over and over again at reader's convenience.

Tales from Shakespeare, by Marcia Williams

Shakespeare made accessible for young readers!

Come wend your way along London’s Thames River to the Globe Theatre, where seven favorite Shakespearean plays are being performed! Marcia Williams brings to life ROMEO AND JULIET, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, JULIUS CAESAR, HAMLET, MACBETH, THE WINTER'S TALE, and THE TEMPESTt, making liberal use of Shakespeare’s rich dialogue. With the help of her signature comic-strip style, the Bard’s 400-year-old masterworks become as relevant to young readers today as they were to theatergoers way back then.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-6-The success of Williams's Greek Myths for Young Children (Candlewick, 1992) is no surprise to those whose first exposure to the classics through "Classic Comics" led to a comfortable and even enthusiastic view of literature. The lively cartoon format never overwhelms the clear progress of the stories. While the technique used in her latest book may boggle the mind of a struggling adult, it should be child's play to average elementary-school readers. Each of the seven selections, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, The Winter's Tale, Julius Caesar, Midsummer Night's Dream, and The Tempest, is told as if it were on a stage, with cartoon panels carrying the actions and direct quotations from the play. The author's narration appears below the panels. An audience surrounds this presentation on three sides of each page. Not only are the stories complex and multilayered, but the byplay in the audience also further complicates these busy pages. As Hamlet struggles with his decision, orange sellers work a crowd that comments irreverently on the play. Queen Elizabeth I and Will himself appear at more than one production. Macbeth, which has a relatively simple story line, is told in larger panels and is not as hard to follow. The Winter's Tale is also not badly served by this treatment, although it's disappointing to find the most cartoonish stage direction in all of Shakespeare, "Exit, pursued by a bear," omitted. While it's hard to imagine anyone except maybe Robin Williams taking this on as a read-aloud, the kids who pore over detail in "Waldo" or Graeme Base's Animalia (Abrams, 1993) may graduate to enjoying an introduction to the plays in this format.

From Booklist
Williams uses the oversize, comic strip format of her King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table (1996) and other picture books to evoke a sense of what it must have been like to attend performances of seven plays at the old Globe Theatre. As the actors stand in running panels atop prose plot summaries, declaiming well-chosen lines from the plays, in the borders men, women, and children of all ages (including, for sharp-eyed viewers, Queen Elizabeth and the Bard himself) watch, laugh, weep, shout smart comments, and fool around. Although watery gray backgrounds give Macbeth and parts of Hamlet a gloomy cast, the mood in general is boisterous: Juliet sprawls fetchingly on her balcony rail; donkey-headed Bottom curls a bespelled Titania's toes; one viewer bids a rowdy youth, "Buzz off," and another, seeing Macbeth waving a pair of gory daggers, opines, "I don't think this is quite suitable for children." On the contrary, although the names and plot twists may sometimes come too fast for some readers to keep straight, this offers an inviting taste of the Shakespearean buffet, as well as a rare glimpse into the character of Elizabethan theater. Cute cartoon like stories, but not exactly what I was expecting in terms of presenting the stories to children.

Fun way to read Shakespeare for both adult and child
By Joan
Tales from Shakespeare, illustrated by Marcia Williams ISBN 0-7636-0441-0 Hardback

(Beware of Amazon's policy to mix personal reviews and editorial reviews within item description of things with the same title but different editors, publishers, illustrators, binding, and so on. So far I only see the Marcia Williams volume linked here, but this can change.)

This volume includes Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, The Winter's Tale, Julius Ceasar, and The Tempest. Each story is told comic book style in 4 pages. Excerpts of the original language are put with the illustrations. Beneath each illustrated strip is straightforward story telling of what is going on. Around the edges of each page are illustrations representing the audience from Shakespeare's time and theater humerously commenting on the play.

The illustrations are colorful and fun and completely within the spirit of Shakespeare. The reader experiences it as part of the audience of a Shakespeare play. I own multiple Marcia Williams illustrated works and love them so much I'm trying to collect all of them (but beware if you click on Marcia Williams, some of what Amazon lists is not illustrated by her).

The volume does a great job of summarizing each play while introducing the child to the fun language of Shakespeare. There is also the historical cultural element of what the audience would be like.

Highly recommended for introducing the love of Shakespeare to small children. Also recommended for adults who want to be introduced to Shakespeare but don't feel they can handle the full stories.

Great Book
By A Customer
I thought this was a great book. I love anything by Marcia Williams. The illustrations are great and there are hillarious comments from the audience throughout the book. This is a great book for kids to enjoy and they also get the basic story line of seven of Shakespeare's most poupular plays. But most of all this book is just fun.

I enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this book! I loved how the two storylines -- although more than a century apart -- are intertwined. Sophia and Daniel, and Ashlin and Gael, are believable, well-written characters and the story is captivating, although it did seem rushed in a few scenes. The antagonist, Harris, was also well-written; I disliked him immediately.

I would've rated this 5 stars, but it's poorly edited, so makes for a difficult read in several places. However, as a source of entertainment, "Predestined Hearts" is a wonderful love story, and I do recommend it.

Review
“I love this book. It helps people to truly walk in someone else’s footprints. This guide will show beginning teachers and other professionals how to build successful relationships with their students' parents.”
(Natalie Marston, Principal 2011-10-21)

"If parents and professionals could wear out their shoes by dancing the way Fialka, Feldman, and Mikus describe it in this book, the shoes would indeed be worth pressing against one’s heart. Through stories, the authors expertly choreograph the steps families, professionals, and the children must take to foster this essential relationship―like a waltz: one, two, three." (Robin McWilliam, Director, Center for Child and Family Research 2011-10-21)

"This book beautifully reminds us that social change happens through listening, dialogue, and engagement. Beneath our roles as professionals and parents, these authors gently help us to remember that 'we are all people first,' and through empathy we can find ways to sidestep―or dance― around many of the missteps that lead to misunderstanding and conflict. This book is a wonderful resource for anyone trying to navigate the complexities of supporting and advocating for disabled students in inclusive classrooms." (Emma Van der Klift and Norman Kunc, Co- directors 2011-11-03)

“A mother who found her calling through fate or accident―and never looked away or glanced back―Janice Fialka is internationally renowned for her relentless, never-say-never advocacy. She and her coauthors offer hope and wisdom for parents who would see more clearly into the lives of their children―disabled or not―and for every professional who would engage them.” (Bill Ayers, Author, To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher and A Kind and Just Parent 2011-12-19)

“Rarely does a book hold such promise for promoting genuine partnerships between families of children with disabilities and the professionals who participate in their care. The real-life passages from the authors, seasoned parents, and experienced professionals infuse this work with unparalleled authenticity.” (Susan Addison, Special Educator, Retired 2011-12-19)

“The authors get right to the heart of parent-professional relationships. They deconstruct and reconstruct the difficult process of examining how parents and professionals communicate. The stories used to illustrate specific points are superb. We need this thoughtful and provoking perspective to encourage us to listen more closely to one another for the benefit our children.” (Martha E. Mock, Assistant Professor 2011-12-19)

“This book accomplishes two impressive feats. First: it conveys, through information and examples, research-based practices for building family-professional partnerships. Second: the clear, storytelling style of writing makes it impossible to put down. This is a must for anyone whose responsibilities involve working with the families of children with disabilities.” (Pamela J. Winton, Senior Scientist and Director of Outreach 2011-12-19)

“The authors powerfully illustrate the ‘dance of partnership’ in complex and nuanced ways. They capture how things are in the real world of relationships between parents and professionals. The stories are moving, the perspectives insightful, and practical strategies and suggestions abound. I recommend this book as a superb source of guidance and support.” (Shari Saunders, Clinical Associate Professor 2011-12-19)

“This is a book written with a quality that is both honest and sensitive. The authors force us to put aside all other issues, reminding us what is real and essential in our pursuit of genuine student learning.” (Georgina M. Terrigno, Speech and Language Pathologist 2011-12-19)

“Having attended many challenging problem-solving meetings, I know how important it is for families and professionals to keep open hearts and minds. This unique resource moves beyond the ‘how to’s’ of effective communication and reminds us of the values that are central to any great team―generosity, creativity, and a willingness to learn from one another.” (Paula Kluth, Consultant & Author, You’re Going to Love This Kid: Teaching Students with Autism in the Inclusive Classroom 2011-12-19)

“The authors capture the range of family and provider experiences, communication styles, and strategies that create effective partnerships. This book is a critically important read for families, providers, and especially for preservice students entering professions in which they will work with children and families.” (Beth Swedeen, Parent and Executive Director 2011-12-20)

“As I read this book, I realized that I kept switching back and forth from my ‘professional’ hat to my ‘parent’ hat. Helping us to switch hats is the real power of this work. The personal stories highlight well-documented themes in the literature on parent and professional perspectives. The strategies are practical and effective. This is a text I will revisit often.” (Dr. Julie Ricks-Doneen, Director, Lowry Center for Early Childhood Education 2011-12-20)

“This is a wonderful reference book to help parent and professionals ‘dance the dance’ together and avoid any missteps. The authors help readers understand the underlying thoughts of both the parent and the professional when they meet to set up a program. This is a sure read for both parents and education professionals.” (Filomena Bernatowicz, Teacher and member, Committee on Preschool Special Education 2011-12-20)

“The authors waltz us through steps to develop effective parent-professional partnerships using dance as a metaphor. When practiced by all participants in the dance, the result is mutual understanding and respect: the core of collaborative relationships. Theirs is a fresh approach to a much-discussed subject―a delightful invitation to dance.” (Elizabeth W. Bauer, Consultant 2011-12-20)

“In my 15 years of teaching, I have not come across a book that so eloquently describes the sensitive relationship between schools and parents as they navigate through the special education process. Using dancing as a metaphor for this delicate relationship, the authors provide an easy-to-read manual that perfectly compliments a college class or professional book study.” (Jennifer Grieco, Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“This book’s valuable information and insights make it a ‘must read’ for everyone involved in the special education process. I will refer to this book frequently as it reminds me of the often unsaid feelings and concerns of parents. The authors provide numerous useful approaches so that all parties can collaborate and do what is best for the child.” (Jacqueline Rau, Fifth-Grade Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“Brilliantly written from the differing vantage points of both parents and professionals, this book shows how perceptions and assumptions can be falsely formed between ‘opponents.’ Use this knowledge to develop the strong partnerships necessary for parents and professionals to collaborate and support the needs of students!" (Kathy Brill, Board Member 2011-12-20)

“So often in special education, the people involved share the same goal, yet envision a different path to achieve that goal. The authors remind us that our ultimate goal is the same. They show us how, even in the most difficult situations, we can ‘dance’ together in successful collaboration.” (Tara Rounds, School Psychologist, CSE/CPSE Chairperson 2011-12-20)

“This book offers important suggestions for finding a way to dance together, reminding us exactly why we are dancing―for the child. I strongly recommend this text to parents and professionals. The real-life examples will help all parties understand and empathize with each other, making it that much easier to dance together.” (Jo Spahr, Parent of a special needs child, and IEP committee member 2011-12-20)

“The parent-professional relationship can be awkward, so using the metaphor of learning to dance together to benefit children is apt. With the resources to help children shrinking, it is more vital than ever for parents and professionals to forge strong partnerships. This perspective can really help―highly recommended.” (Robert A. Naseef, Author of Special Children, Challenged Parents 2011-12-20)

“The authors have done the near impossible―they have described the process of partnership in a way that is both easily accessible and incredibly nuanced. They provide a developmental roadmap and the concrete tools we need to make partnerships work. In this book, I have finally found the resource I need.” (Ethan Lowenstein, Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction 2011-12-20)

“The approach of this book is fresh, current and multifaceted without being complicated. The authors have skillfully woven multiple and complex family and professional perspectives into a well-integrated whole that is thoughtful, clear, and explicit. The material is relevant, useful, and extraordinarily helpful to a wide variety of dance partners.” (Camille Catlett, Scientist 2011-12-20)

“This book comes from the heart of an author who knows both sides. The content is relevant, immediately useful, and encourages us to think deeply about ourselves and how we can apply the information to make a difference―all evidence-based components of effective adult learning.” (Juliann Woods, Director 2011-12-20)

“The authors never forget that it is all about the children/students with disabilities―so the adults just need to figure it out! They include many subtle examples of how inclusion can work throughout the book. An important take-away message is that becoming true partners takes time and is a process.” (Peggy A. Gallagher, Professor of Early Childhood Special Education 2011-12-20)

“The authors help readers understand that relationships are about human needs and feelings and that partnerships only develop to their potential when each party can both share and listen to content and facts as well as the needs and feelings of the other. This book is destined to be a classic. Give it to someone you care about; and read it yourself reflectively.” (Michael Peterson, Director 2011-12-20)

“The authors of this book offer a welcomed, kind and needed message for both professionals and parents: slow the pace, stop and listen. The authors know we build each partnership one at a time. This is a message we desperately need to get into higher education and professional development communities.” (Mary Jane Brotherson, Professor, Department of Human Development and Family Studies 2011-12-20)

“This book reminds teachers and professionals to include parents in the timeline of the special education process. The information that parents contribute and different perspective they provide can help us understand the whole child. As I finished this book, I developed a more open perspective to working with parents.” (Maura Crown, Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“I will use this book as a key text in my courses that include the topics of collaborative teaching, home-school partnerships, and conflict mediation. What a great book for modeling for new teachers the realities of collaboration in the IEP process and the best practices that make the process a joyful dance rather than a difficult experience.” (Jacqueline Thousand, Professor 2011-12-20)

“Using understandable, jargon-free language, the authors help professionals and parents understand each others’ viewpoints. The text also provides practical tips and suggestions about how to work together collaboratively. I highly recommend this book for novice and veteran parents and professionals.” (Stephanie Smith Lee, Former Director, Office of Special Education Programs 2011-12-20)

“I found myself nodding in agreement with virtually all the points made in this book. The process is, indeed, a dance. Although one would think we have mastered dancing, each student, each family, each day brings forth a new dance. As partners and parents we need to tweak out that uniqueness in the child together.” (Jo-Anne Dobbins, Director of Pupil Personnel Services 2011-12-20)

“This book serves as a vital resource and provides essential viewpoints for professionals. The text also reminds parents how valuable their input is to the process. In the spirit of collaboration, we highly recommend this book.” (Tiiu Presutti, Special Education Teacher, Melinda Sulzbach, School Social Worker & Adrienne Hershfield, School Psychologist 2011-12-20)

Arlene K. Feldman, MA, PD, SDA, LDT/C, began her career in education in 1967, at the ripe old age of 20. The depth and breadth of her experience within the field of education is varied and extensive. She has been a general education teacher, a special education teacher, principal of a special education preschool, Director of Special Education for 20 years, and is currently an Adjunct Professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Her greatest educational accomplishment, for which she was presented the Excellence in Leadership Award by the NYS Council for Exceptional Children, was the introduction and development of the Collaborative Teaching Model (co-teaching within the inclusive classroom.) in her school district. Believing in the benefits of collaboration, she is also passionate about the partnership between professionals and parents of students with disabilities. She fervently strives to inspire her graduate students, the next generation of educators, to welcome students with disabilities into their inclusive classrooms, to understand the strengths and challenges of these students, so that they, as teachers, may meet their unique needs and enable them to succeed, and to work earnestly and collaboratively with their parents, with the students as beneficiaries.

Arlene and her husband, Dr. Harvey Feldman, a Developmental Optometrist, live in New York, and are the proud parents of four, grandparents of seven with two on the way, and hopefully, more to come!

Beautiful.
By Lee Ann Jung
It can be easy for professionals in special education to become lost in the sea of acronyms, legalese, and seemingly endless prescribed procedures for special education services. Fialka and her coauthors move us far beyond these procedural elements to refocus our attention on people and relationships. They offer brilliant guidance for navigating relationships as families and providers work together to support children. This will be required reading in my course on families in the future.

Working together for a special needs child
By Barbara Laird
I recommend this book to anyone faced with an IEP, or any situation where you need to understand and be understood to come to an agreement. The book deals with two parties who have the best interests of a special needs child, but come with different ideas on the best solution. Fialka and Feldman present many ideas, illustrated with interesting stories, on how to make the process go from awkward missteps to smoother dancing.

A must for Parents and Professional who believe in inclusion, democracy and the potential of all students
By Rich Feldman
For decades too many progressives educators and social justice activists have "forgotten" our children with disabilities. "Partnering for Children with Disabilities: A Dance that Matters" helps us listen to each other and learn from each other so a new vision of education emerges that respects the potential of all our children. This book will help all parents and professionals to listen, learn and create meaningful dialogue that will support our children who have disabilities.
