Is The War Over? The Memoir of Werner Kurt Braun, by Werner Braun

Unforgettable new autobiography brings to life the experiences of a young German medical student who suddenly found himself at the heart of the Second World War, first as a soldier, and then as a prisoner of war.

Werner K. Braun grew up in Germany in the industrial town of Manheim. He was studying medicine at the University of Heidelberg with grand dreams of becoming a Doctor when Germany invaded Poland and the Second World War broke out. Life as Werner knew it had ceased to exist, and he waited anxiously for the inevitable draft, a call that would eventually reach him in the autumn of 1942. He joined the infamous Luftwaffe as a war cadet officer, forced to abandon his studies, and threw himself into the ominous unknown of international conflict. Braun served in the German Army across Europe until a fateful assignment to Normandy, France, in 1944 saw him captured in Belgium whilst retreating from the D-Day landings. He was dispatched to England where he would see out the remaining days of the war as a German POW.

First-hand accounts of World War II resonate with the grim realities of life on the frontline, of the personal sacrifices made, the loss and the tragedy, but also with a profound wisdom, born out of a life-changing experience that few of us can imagine. This beautiful collaborative autobiography between Werner K. Braun and young Irish Actor and Second World War enthusiast David Coakley, evokes Werner's story eloquently, honestly and with great skill. It reveals a young man swept up by the great storms of European politics, who would struggle for much of his adult life to make sense of how his own path could so dramatically change course. Braun's insight alone is a fitting tribute to the sacrifice of his generation, irrespective of their Nationality, with Braun and Coakley's fine writing making this an exceptional read.
